LAURA DERUBEIS-BYRNE, PH.D.

Mission Statement:

My mission is to empower you towards positive change by helping you to transform obstacles into possibilities, stemming from a compassion focused, client centered approach, helping you to achieve your highest potential.

What would happen if you were able to feel seen and heard?

What would you say if you were given a safe space to share your truth at this moment in time? How would your life change if you were more emotionally available to hear others around you and allow them into your life?

“Our greatest ability as humans is not to change the world, but to change ourselves.”

“Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions. Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Clinical Approach:

In my clinical work, I seek to provide a safe supportive space, employing a client-centered eclectic therapeutic approach, starting where you are, to help you uncover aspects of your life, experiences, and relationships that are not in alignment with your needs and goals. Addressing these aspects will enhance your ability to function to your fullest potential.

Specialties:

I specialize in the incorporation of mindfulness practices including somatic resourcing and experiencing techniques and the utilization of eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) for embodied trauma. I employ a psychodynamic/Jungian framework, augmented with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and trauma focused-CBT techniques when clinically relevant. I work with pre-teens, adolescents, families, and adults in individual, family, and couple’s therapy. With couples, I use an emotion-focused therapy approach, with the understanding that communication barriers can be resolved by identifying the core needs of the individuals and the couple. I am ENM, Poly, kink, and LGBTQIA+ aware.

Background and Credentials:

I earned my Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology at Adelphi University specializing in child, adolescent, and family. I received my clinical training from an array of institutions and facilities in New York City including Mount Sinai Beth Israel adult/geriatric inpatient (research), the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, and the Maimonides Medical Center child/adolescent outpatient track. My doctoral-level internship was at Manhattan Psychiatric Center, a multiple-ward in-patient psychiatric hospital, where I created a mindfulness group therapy for the crisis and sex offender unit in addition to my internship requirements. Throughout the pandemic, as a post-doc, and as a newly licensed psychologist I was a staff psychologist in multiple skilled nursing home facilities in Queens.

I am EMDR Basic 1 and 2 trained and am licensed to practice in NY and NJ. I am an EMBARK-certified facilitator of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy in Cybin’s first-in-human trial of CYB003 for major depressive disorder. I am also certified by Yoga Alliance as a yoga instructor (ERYT, 200).
